VP Calls for Systemic Action on Stubble Burning, Stresses Climate Emergency Preparedness

New Delhi, December 15, 2024 – Vice-President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has urged the nation to adopt a systemic approach to address stubble burning, highlighting its severe repercussions on health, productivity, and quality of life. Speaking at the National Energy Conservation Day 14, Dec.2024 function at Vigyan Bhawan, the Vice-President stated that “hazardous environmental situations in the National Capital due to stubble burning cannot be tackled by individuals alone. Innovation and systemic solutions are imperative.” He emphasized that negligence in this matter jeopardizes public health, disrupts normal life, and impacts children’s education due to extreme pollution levels.

The Vice-President underscored the universal threat posed by the climate crisis, remarking that it “obliterates social barriers, affecting both rich and poor, urban and rural communities alike.” He warned, “We either act together or we perish together,” urging collective responsibility in combating climate change.

Drawing on India’s rich cultural heritage, Shri Dhankhar described civilizational wisdom as a “survival manual for the climate emergency.” Referencing ancient scriptures like the Vedas, Puranas, and epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, he called for inspiration from traditional values, which have long emphasized conservation and sustainable living.

The Vice-President also pointed to the Constitution’s Article 51A, which mandates environmental conservation as a fundamental duty. “While we cherish our fundamental rights, during times of societal challenges, our duties must take precedence,” he asserted.

On responsible resource usage, Shri Dhankhar stressed the importance of optimal utilization of natural resources, irrespective of financial capacity. He remarked, “Energy and resources are not individual possessions but a collective legacy for humanity, demanding responsible consumption from all.”

The event, attended by Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon’ble Minister of State for Power, and other dignitaries, highlighted the pressing need for energy conservation and innovative solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.
