No damage due to oil spill near Uran-ONGC

On 08 September 2023, a minor oil spill occurred at the ONGC Uran Plant, which leaked a small quantity of oil from one of the crude oil storage tanks. The leaked oil entered the storm water drain channel due to heavy rains, but the quantity was minimal, and the oil got trapped between rocks on the beach, with only traces reaching the shoreline.

The Oil Spill Response (OSR) team from ONGC was immediately deployed to prevent the ingress of oil into the sea, and cleaning of the shoreline commenced promptly. Due to the rocky terrain of the beach and heavy rains, the cleaning process required significant effort. However, the timely and tireless efforts of the ONGC team ensured that the oil did not enter the sea, and no damage to marine life is expected.

Additionally, a breach in the storm water drain channel wall caused a small quantity of oil to enter only 4-5 paddy fields, resulting in limited damage. However, none of the farmers or fishermen suffered any loss due to the spill, as it occurred on the rocky part of the beach. ONGC’s prompt and proactive actions for cleaning the oil spill from the beach and drain channels have led to an early restoration, which is now nearing completion.
