In a letter to the PM, they expressed deep concern over the recent horrific incident at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of existing laws, harsher punishments for perpetrators, enhanced safety measures, and a special law for protecting healthcare workers.
The doctors called for swift and decisive action to prevent such atrocities, recommending:
1. Stricter enforcement of existing laws
2. Harsher and time-bound punishments for perpetrators
3. Enhanced safety measures in hospitals
4. Enactment and implementation of a special law for protecting healthcare workers
5. Harshest possible punishment for violence against healthcare workers
The doctors appealed to the PM to safeguard the medical profession against physical assaults and defacement of dignity and respect. They urged the government to take immediate action to create a society where such horrors are unthinkable.
