BPCL and GPS Renewables Ink Joint Venture to Set Up Compressed Biogas Plants Across India

Strategic move strengthens BPCL’s energy transition and rural sustainability goals

Mumbai, April 23, 2025 – In a significant development aligned with India’s clean energy ambitions, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and GPS Renewables Pvt. Ltd. have formalized their Joint Venture (JV) agreement to establish Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants across key Indian states.

This collaboration marks a strategic milestone in BPCL’s roadmap to achieve Net Zero targets and reflects a growing synergy between public and private players in the renewable energy space. The agreement was signed by Shri Sameet Pai, Head of Corporate Strategy at BPCL, and Shri Mainak Chakraborty, CEO & Co-Founder of GPS Renewables, in the presence of BPCL Directors Shri Sanjay Khanna (Refineries) and Shri Raj Kumar Dubey (HR).

The joint venture will convert agricultural and organic biomass waste into Compressed Biogas, supporting India’s sustainable energy ecosystem. By integrating advanced waste-to-energy technologies, the initiative seeks to tackle pressing environmental issues such as stubble burning and greenhouse gas emissions, while also fostering sustainable rural development.

Initial plans include setting up 8–10 CBG plants across agri-rich states such as Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. These regions offer significant biomass potential and are already mapped within BPCL’s city gas distribution footprint, enhancing cost efficiency and logistical coordination.

The project also aims to empower rural communities by creating a structured supply chain for agri-residue, thereby offering farmers an alternative income stream. Additionally, it will support national initiatives like the GOBARdhan scheme, the SATAT program for green transport solutions, and clean fuel adoption mandates under the CBG Blending Obligation framework.

This partnership not only advances India’s bioenergy footprint but also reinforces BPCL’s long-term strategic focus on energy diversification, sustainability, and import substitution through domestic renewable fuel production.
