New & Renewable Energy Deptt., Govt. of Madhya Pradesh has allotted 525 MW Pumped Storage Power Project to NHDC Ltd. This Pumped Storage Power Project will be constructed using the existing reservoirs (Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar) of Indira Sagar Project. Keeping in view the need for increasing peak hour demand of the state, 525 MW Pumped Storage Project will be constructed by NHDC near Indira Sagar. With increased renewable energy through this pumped storage project, the energy needs of the state can be met during peak hours (morning and evening). Through this pumped storage project, 1226.93 million units of energy will be generated in peak hours. The estimated cost of this project will be Rs. 4,200 Crores.
There is a potential of 96.5 GW pumped storage projects in the country, out of which there is a potential of 11.2 GW in the state. At present, two power stations of NHDC Limited, Indira Sagar Power Station (1000 MW) and Omkareshwar Power Station (520 MW) are in operation in Khandwa district of the state. 100 percent power produced from them are supplied to Madhya Pradesh. NHDC is now determined to make the state a green state through the production of green energy with construction of solar power projects. Construction of 8 MW solar project in the historic city of Sanchi and 88 MW floating Solar Project on Omkareshwar Reservoir is in progress.
